A gold medal can summarize an athletic achievement, and a logo can summarize a brand. Neither fully explains Joel Stallworth. His public story connects sport, faith, entrepreneurship, mental-health work, family and a continuing desire to create opportunities for other people. Stallworth grew up in Stockton in a large extended family shaped by the church founded by his grandfather, Bishop Lewis Stallworth Sr. His path through college was not seamless. He initially worked after high school, then enrolled at San Joaquin Delta College with encouragement from a coach. He later transferred to Stanislaus State, earned a communication studies degree and competed in both basketball and track. His athletic rise was exceptional.
