Harriet Tubman, born into slavery in the early 19th century, is best known for role as a conductor the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used help enslaved African Americans escape to free states. Tubman made an estimated 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, earning her the nickname "Moses" for leading her people to freedom.
